I fell in love with yoga as a result of some health concerns I was addressing. While learning and obsessing, I was amazed by all the different types. As a metalhead, I was particularly drawn to heavy metal yoga (thanks to Saskia Thode of Metal Yoga Bones). It was then that I came to believe that the yogic path was not made of a single road; there are many ways to travel.
Metalhead Yoga was born because I'm a metalhead and I found my personal yoga, and now I want to help you find your yoga, whatever kind that may be (heavy metal not required 😉).
Yoga is for everyone. Your yoga doesn't need to be "perfect"; it just needs to be perfect for your body.
Living in Fort Worth, I was large and heavy, but that wasn't the problem. My health was declining and certain genetic issues were starting to rear their ugly heads. So, my doctor and I started working together to fix them and I lost more than 100 lbs. However, there were a lot of things I could no longer do, like run and jump, because my knees were no longer in good shape. I was also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. Then came yoga.
After some time practicing yoga, I realized I loved it and wanted to share it, and was encouraged to do so by my yoga mentors. I have many years of teaching experience under my belt, and that helped.
Like most, I had to find my own way of doing things. There are things in the world of yoga that work for me, and things that don't. I'm not great at strict rules. But, my mentors also encouraged me to find my own path. So, I merged parts of myself with my yoga practice, and here I am with Metalhead Yoga. Here we listen to our bodies and let them tell us what they want to do. We rest when we need, go gentle when we need, and push ourselves only when we're ready. We aren't "Instagram" yogis.
I love teaching yoga, and so I'll do it whenever and wherever I can. Someday, I want to have my own brick-and-mortar yoga studio and be a full-time yogi. Hopefully, that's where I'm headed.

Nope! MHY is a place for everyone of all tastes. I love teaching and exploring many different kinds of yoga with many different kinds of music. I love making playlists catering to students' likes. Most of my classes consist of hatha, vinyasa, restorative, yin, chair and more, or some combination thereof. Heavy metal yoga is my favorite, and a bonus option!
They're for anyone. I teach a lot of different things, but I try to make all my classes accessible to anyone. You don't have to have a great deal of experience or knowledge to take classes with me. Even if we're doing an active class like vinyasa, you can do what you want, skip what you want, alter what you want to make it suit you, and I'll always offer other options for your asanas (poses).
Not yet; that's the goal for the future. I teach online, mostly. For face-to-face clients, I travel to them, or meet them somewhere.
